Mosquita y Mari

Mosquita y Mari follows Yoli and her new friendship with Mari. The two girls have almost opposite personalities, as Yoli is very studious and quiet, while Mari is more rebellious. Yoli begins tutoring Mari, and as their friendship deepens it turns into something more. I really enjoyed this film; it was sweet to see their relationship bloom. While at times there was a lack of dialogue, the pure chemistry between the girls made up for it. You could really feel the emotions and tension through the screen.

A lot of times throughout the film there was this conflict or pull between studies, money, and love. Yoli being an only child of immigrant parents, they really want her to do well in school. In one particular scene, as they are driving home from a meeting with her teacher the father tells her, “we don’t have to return to Mexico to be reminded what poverty looks like. It’s just a few blocks away from us. Your mother and I work very hard to make sure your future is far from this.” On the other hand, Mari’s family includes her sister and single mother, struggling to make enough money for their house. Mari works in order to help out her mother with the rent. While the girls become closer and closer, these responsibilities pull them away from each other and can be boiled down to money. In Yoli’s case, she is studying in order to get into college and ultimately get a job that pays well. Mari’s already working to make money for her family.

Even though Yoli and Mari are often pulled apart, they find safe spaces to just be with each other. For example, in the old garage they are able to study together and talk intimately about whatever’s on their minds. While we never actually see them kiss, it’s clear they feel deeply about each other. They may end up going in different directions in the future, but what they feel for each other will always be there.

  1. I think your observation that money plays a big role in the sort of push and pull in their relationship is really true, they both come from different financial backgrounds, but the stress of money is still there, with Yoli having to do well in order to have the future far from poverty that her parents want for her, and Mari having to work odd jobs to scrape up enough money to help pay rent. Those are pretty big pressures for both characters, and certainly affect the kind of relationship they can have.

  2. I agree with your observations, there is so much pressure with both characters just in different ways. Mari has had to grow up a lot quicker than Yoli but Yoli has expectations for the future.
